MARDEN, England–()–Sign installation and maintenance specialist Xmo Strata – which uses high-end video extensively in its health and safety programme – will begin shooting shortly on three new video projects with the topics chosen by employees.
“We thought we might get a useable idea from it … but the level of active engagement and commitment was amazing. The employee teams, aided in some cases by senior customer figures who sat-in on the sessions, presented some first class ideas.”
Late last year, employees were challenged to come up with topics which would be suitable for video, would help tackle a genuine industry-wide problem, and would help to provide real solutions.
Employees were divided into teams of ten for the exercise with each team developing an idea. The company committed to producing a video on the winning topic but in the final analysis Operations Director, Kate Parmentier said there were so many good ideas that the firm would produce three of them.
The videos will focus on:
1. Last minute risk assessments.
2. Safer use of a scissor lift.
3. Lock Out, Tag Out procedures.
“Video is a powerful medium for getting across health and safety messages – in our experience, it just works,” said Mrs Parmentier.
“But good health and safety practice is about listening, as much as it is about broadcasting received wisdom, so we wanted to engage employees in the programme and make sure that we responded to their ideas, concerns and suggestions.

The ideas have now been briefed-out to a professional film maker and the first of them will appear in quarter one of 2012, with the others at intervals through the year. Some of the employees who were involved in coming up with the ideas will be ‘seconded’ to the video crew for the day and will see their ideas translated into film first hand.
Xmo Strata takes video seriously and makes much of its video material available on its website for anyone to see at http://www.xmostrata.com/videos/index.php
